This series is a summary report of a mental retardation conference, "Total Push for MR," held 1971 June 21-23, in Montgomery, Ala., for the purpose of promoting expanded services for the retarded. The conference was sponsored by the Developmental Disabilities Services and Facilities Construction Act (Public Law 91-517), whose administration was delegated to the Department. Three sections, the General Session, Discussion Leaders, and Group Recommendations, composed the report. Commissioner Stonewall B. Stickney gave the keynote address. Included are discussions of the Special Olympics, a program developed by the Commission on Physical Fitness; agency services provided, including Partlow State School, community facilities, the Society for Crippled Children and Adults, the Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, and the Alabama Association for Retarded Children; special education in public schools, vocational rehabilitation, and teacher training programs.
